Kākāriki Karaka Aviary

Playing our part in helping New Zealand thrive

We have recently been a part of the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary's translocation and reintroduction project for the kākāriki karaka (orange-fronted parakeet), a critically endangered species of New Zealand native birds.

History and requirements

Since 2021, kākāriki karaka raised in captivity have been translocated to the growing population in the sanctuary. ENI Engineering manufactured metal bird aviaries that are used to hold the birds for a few days to acclimatise before their release into the wider sanctuary.

Challenges

The main challenge for this project was to design and manufacture aviaries that were strong, secure, and predator-proof, while also being comfortable and spacious for the birds. We worked closely with the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary team to ensure that the aviaries met all of their requirements.

Conclusion

We are proud to have played a role in the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary's translocation and reintroduction project for the kākāriki karaka. The Kākāriki Karaka Aviaries have been essential to the success of the project, and they are now helping to ensure the survival of this critically endangered species.
